Last week, several families volunteered to do projects around the garden ranging from weeding Calendula, to pulling bindweed up at the orchard, to collecting Solstice's famous poppy seeds. Though our volunteers ranged from toddler to early elementary school age, they jumped into the tasks at hand with gusto, and together with their parents and fueled by juice pouches and Robin's excellent molasses cookies, much was accomplished. My own daughter said of the event: "That was a lot of fun and I even made a new friend!" Though she initially dragged her feet going, she found that once she got there, it felt good to chip in, be at the garden, and have a chance to meet someone new. Relatable sentiment!
As Tim said in his email about the Saturday work party, it was a similar success with the Ever Faithful to Solstice Pea Patch Veteran Gardeners:, Robin, Karen, Sharon, Cindy, Sandra, and Tim present. Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers for lending a helping hand to battle the weeds and keep our garden looking beautiful
I'm so glad you are saving the Poppy seeds! I brought the seeds to Solstice about six years ago from a guerilla garden we started at the Genesee Hill abandoned elementary school before the new school was built. One of the fun things about the poppies is that you can never be sure of the color. The seeds aren't true to the original poppy plant.
