Giving Garden

IMG_5406.jpeg

During the first ten years of the Solstice P-Patch's existence, 1,200 lbs. of fresh vegetables were given annually to the West Seattle Food Bank. This endeavor was accomplished by faithful, hard-working and generous P-Patchers (Passionate People).

Our Solstice P-Patch Giving Garden occupies ten beds of vegetables: zucchini, lettuce, beans (green), basil, kale, and tomatoes. Some of these vegetables are started and donated by our gardeners, like the kale and tomatoes. The tomatoes are grown from seed in a P-Patch member’s garage, under grow lights. The seeds grown are selected from Tomato Fest, a tomato taste-testing event hosted annually in our garden, by an A+ P-Patch tomato grower. Tomato starts that are planted in June are chosen by tasting and voting at this Festival. (Only the best tasting make the grade).

The beds are prepared in the spring - the cover crop is turned under to provide nitrogen for the soil, weeds are taken out and fertilizer is placed on each bed in April. In the autumn we plant new crimson clover as cover crop to over winter. All of this work done by our Solstice gardeners, provides food-a-plenty, for folks who use the Food Bank in West Seattle.
