It's A Wrap: The 2020 Giving Garden Season is a Success

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

What a season it has been! Many gardeners this summer noted the difficult growing conditions that we experienced. Combined with the challenges presented by the pandemic and the impacts we've all felt in a myriad of ways, it is important to celebrate successes wherever we see them. My own garden produced very few tomatoes this year but we were swimming with tomatillos and as a enjoyed multiple renditions of

Green Chile Stew, one of my most favorite meals! Time to celebrate!

But thinking more broadly, it's time to appreciate the accomplishments in the Solstice Giving Garden. The Solstice Giving Garden season concluded October 19th this year, and since March 20th this year, 999 lbs. of produce was produced and donated by the Giving Garden, just 109 lbs. shy of what was grown in 2019, which was by many measures an easier garden season. SUCCESS! Combined with the 255 lbs individual gardeners donated from their plots, the Solstice P-Patch donated 1,254 lbs to our local West Seattle Food Bank. Congratulations and many, many thanks to our Giving Garden leader, Sharon Shrenzel, and the dedicated volunteers that contributed multiple hours to assist her. Here's a special message from Sharon:

This gardening year has been a great challenge: The Spring Weather, the COVID restrictions, but what stands tall is the commitment from the P-Patch gardeners, with their good hearts , handing in there, to contribute and share the bounty that the good Earth and people’s work provides to others. Thanks to all.

And with that, it is time to celebrate! Our End-of-the-Season P-Patch Halloween Gala is next Saturday, Oct. 31 at 10 am at the Solstice P-Patch. Please RSVP by this Tuesday, Oct. 27th!
